DVS Charlottesville (Virginia Dept of Veterans Services)

The Virginia Department of Veterans Services (DVS) is organized into six service delivery sections: benefits; veteran and family support; veterans education, transition, and employment; veterans care centers; veterans cemeteries; and the Virginia War Memorial. 

Virginia Veterans Network

The Virginia Veterans Network (VVN) is a free online hub of resources and services for veterans and service members managed by the Virginia Department of Veterans Services (DVS).

Uniquely Local Organizations

ParadeRest

ParadeRest has served the University of Virginia and Charlottesville area veteran community since 2009. Its primary effort is to engage military personnel and their families with the local community. ParadeRest provides donated tickets for veterans to attend local events; hosts races and fundraisers to bring the community together and fund veteran services; runs programs to identify the fallen and preserve veterans’ stories; and salutes those members of our community who serve.

Living Free Together: Programs for Military Families

LFT is a 501(c)(3) that values and honors the service and sacrifice of Charlottesville’s military families by offering skill-building workshops and opportunities for engaging in community to help veterans and military families to grow personally and together.

Gratitude Charlottesville

Gratitude Charlottesville is a 501(c)(3) that was founded in 2018. Gratitude began as a directory of Charlottesville-area businesses that offer discounts or special offers to our local Military and Police and has continued to grow into a larger mission of promoting patriotism to all and fostering a community of gratitude to recognize the Service of our local heroes.

Salute of Virginia

Salute of Virginia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting veterans across the state by connecting them with essential resources, financial aid, job opportunities, and a strong community.

Hyperbaric Wellness Foundation

The Hyperbaric Wellness Foundation Corp. is committed to reviving the strength and restoring the purpose of those who have dedicated their lives to service. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are neurological injuries that profoundly impact both mental and physical well-being and are highly responsive to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). By funding access to treatment, spreading awareness, and driving policy change, we work to make HBOT a widely recognized and accessible therapy for these and other service-related conditions.

Dogwood Vietnam Memorial

Dedicated on April 20, 1966, the Charlottesville Dogwood Vietnam Memorial (the “Memorial) is the first public-civic memorial in the United States of America to honor all members of the United States Military who served and those who gave their lives in the war in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Each year since, there has been an annual re-dedication of the Memorial.

Nature for Wellness Foundation

Nature for Wellness Foundation seeks to establish, maintain, and administer restorative natural areas which can serve as “healing grounds” for the mind and spirit. Scientific studies have shown the positive effect that safe, quiet, natural spaces can have on a person’s sense of well-being. Partnering with others, we would like to create that space to promote healing.

Blue Star Mothers Central Virginia Chapter

Since forming in the early spring of 2003, Blue Star Families of Central Virginia has steadily grown to over 50 families. Our membership includes families with loved ones serving in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, as well as civilians employed at the National Ground Intelligence Center. The group conducts monthly casual meetings with most of our time devoted to assembling care packages for deployed service members, sharing stories about our service members, their work and taskings.

Coming Home Well

Coming Home Well is an all-volunteer non-profit organization whose mission is to support and empower veterans and first responders as they navigate the challenges of returning home from service, transitioning out of their professional roles, and re-assimilating into civilian life. We do this through a network of podcasts, collaborations and the CHW Streaming Radio Channel.

A Co 3-116th Infantry

Charlottesville-based “Outlaw Company” (Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment) is the local unit of the largest major command in the Virginia National Guard.

Holistic Outreach for Veterans

Holistic practitioners offer FREE services, including massage, Reiki, and Acudetox, to veterans, their spouses, and caregivers on the 4th Monday of each month from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at SALON DeSHANO in Palmyra.

Charlottesville Military Families (Facebook group)

This is a Facebook forum for all future, current, and past Charlottesville military families to ask questions and share advice. Because of the unique nature of this group, everyone must verify their connection to the military and Charlottesville before being added. Active community with 1000+ members!

Central Virginia Community Acupuncture

Central Virginia Community Acupuncture (CVCA) is a group of volunteer acupuncturists that started in 2008 to serve, in particular, veterans and their families. CAVA utilizes space provided by the Charlottesville Health Department at 1138 Rose Hill Drive and provides free treatments every Tuesday at 5:30PM.

Veterans Collaborative serves active-duty service members, Veterans, and their families by leveraging resources and capabilities to strengthen accessibility to vital support and opportunity through a centralized network.

Local Chapters of National Organizations

American Legion Post 74 – Charlottesville

Post 74 is proud to be the Charlottesville-Albemarle County home of The American Legion, the world’s largest veterans organization with over 2.4 million members. The 2019 Legion Act is the authority for any honorably discharged veteran to apply for membership in The American Legion. 

American Legion Post 128 – Greene County

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.

American Legion Post 116 – Louisa County

Marine Corps League Detachment 1256 – Charlottesville

Active, reserve, retired, and veteran Marines continue the faithful tradition of looking out for the Marines to their left and right. Providing mentorship, career counseling, Veteran Service Officer VA support, assisting with transitions, and providing opportunities for family. Founded by MajGen John Lejeune in 1923; for over 100 years we continue to stand proud as a veteran’s service organization.

VFW Post 1827 – Charlottesville

VFW Post 8169 – Scottsville

One of the oldest Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Virginia. Located 3 miles east of Scottsville, VA. Meetings are held every second Sunday of the month (unless it’s a holiday) at 3 p.m.

Student Veterans of America (SVA) at PVCC

SVA at Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) provides students who are veterans or active service members and their families with the resources, support and advocacy needed to meet their education and career goals while at PVCC and following graduation.  The organization participates in and organizes projects, events and activities and provides a social group to help veterans transition to life on campus and in the community.

Student Veterans of America (SVA) at UVA

SVA at UVA is committed to identifying and disseminating information about opportunities that present themselves to student-veterans and other military-affiliated students. This includes, but isn’t limited to: scholarships, employers, Veterans Affairs information, seminars, local events, application-based majors, UVA hosted events specifically for veterans and social functions.
